Zac Efron grows a beard (but is he just trying to hide his box office disappointment?)

By Daily Mail Reporter

Moustache man: Zac Efron sported new facial hair at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday night, with blue nail varnish on two of his fingernails

He's tried to distance himself from the teen roles that made him famous by heading in a more mature direction.

And Zac Efron was clearly trying to bolster his new image with some grown-up-looking facial hair at the Teen Choice Awards yesterday.

Perhaps his new wispy beard and moustache combo was an effort to hide himself after the commercial and critical disappointment of his latest film Charlie St. Cloud.

The 22-year-old star looked pretty glum as he took to the stage to present the award for Best Actress in a drama which went to Blind Side actress Sandra Bullock.

However, he was able to muster a smile as he presented the gong - in the shape of a giant surfboard - to the Oscar-winning actress.

As well as his new facial hair, Zac was also bizarrely seen sporting blue nail varnish on two of his fingernails.

Charlie St.Cloud has performed poorly at the U.S. Box Office, tumbling to eighth place in this weekend's chart, making just $4.7 million.

The film was also critically panned, with The Hollywood Reporter saying:

'Efron plays Charlie as your average young movie-star hunk. He takes off his shirt frequently but looks ungainly and stilted in his beefcake poses.'

The movie sees Zac play a teenager who has to choose between keeping a promise he made to his brother, who died in a car accident, or trying to get the girl he loves.
