Miss World 2010, Performers Announced

29th October 2010

INTERNATIONAL STARS MAKE MISS WORLD 2010 A TV SPECTACULAR

The Miss World Final 2010 will be bigger, brighter and more spectacular than ever, as 115 of the world’s most beautiful and talented young women take to the glittering stage on Saturday 30 October for the start of the 60th anniversary year.

The global TV audience will be entertained by some incredible musical talent. A trio of world class performances will come from international singers and musicians who have flown in for this event:

Shayne Ward: Singer

Global chart-topper who made it big after winning UK TV talent show The X Factor.Debut single ‘That’s My Goal’ smashed UK records for first day sales, debuting at Number One and selling more than 1.3 million copies. He also topped charts in Hong Kong, Sweden, Indonesia, Korea, South Africa, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Departing from the ballads of his million selling platinum debut album, for his second album chose to make music bursting with energy. His latest unselfconscious and fruity collection of pop, R&B and electronica takes influences from Prince, Ne-Yo and Justin Timberlake.

Dave Koz : Saxophonist

In a career that spans twenty years and a dozen albums, saxophonist Dave Koz has established himself as a prominent figure in contemporary music. He released his self-titled debut in 1990. The gold certified The Dance (1999) and Saxophonic (2003) each spawned five Top 5 hits on the contemporary jazz charts, and the latter scored two Grammy nominations. In 2007 At the Movies spent 12 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart and scored a second Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album. Latest album Hello Tomorrow features an array of high-profile guests: Herb Alpert, Jonathan Butler, Brian Culbertson, Sheila E, Boney James, Jeff Lorber, Keb’ Mo’, Ray Parker, Jr. and others.

Carlos Aponte : Singer

Puerto Rican singing sensation Carlos Aponte won a standing ovation at NBC’s America’s Got Talent, when he debuted before a TV audience of 14 million people. His fame grew fast and his online video site received more than one million visits. His website was inundated with request for him to appear again and release his pop-opera material. Carlos treats classic material with a style popular with today’s market: an ideal combination to span the age groups and nations of the world.

The event will also feature music and dance performances from Sanya, the home of Miss World in China.

The Miss World Final is one of the biggest and best loved TV events: franchised in more than 130 countries, broadcast in over 180 countries, and seen by more than one billion viewers, making it the World’s most watched annual TV event. This is the fifth time that Sanya has been home to the Miss World Final, successfully hosting the 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007 events.

Miss World pageant returns to China; Miss Norway is Front-runner

BEIJING, October 28 – A bevy of 120 beauties from around the globe will don their most alluring evening gowns and sexiest swimwear on Saturday for the Miss World pageant in the Chinese resort town of Sanya.

After a month-long tour of China, from visiting the striking Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing to shopping in Shanghai, contestants have now invaded Hainan island’s pristine beaches for the early mini-contests and the main event.

Norway’s Mariann Birkedal, the raven-haired 23-year-old who earned a spot in the final by taking the preliminary Top Model title, is tipped by bookmakers to take the crown-a result that might anger authorities in Beijing.

China has been at odds with Oslo since the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded earlier this month to jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo-and any glory for Norway, even in a beauty pageant, might ruffle some official feathers.

However, forward momentum on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between China and Norway appears to be on track, despite the recent spat over awarding of the Nobel Prize. “FTA negotiations between the two countries are still right on track and have not been affected by the Nobel incident, as far as I know,” Jo Inge Bekkevold, Economic Counselor for Norwegian Embassy, told the Global Times Thursday. Norway is currently China’s fourth largest trading partner in northern Europe.

Also tipped by British bookmakers William Hill are Alexandria Mills of the United States, Yara Santiago of Puerto Rico, and Brazil’s Kamilla Salgado.

The competition, which was first held in 1951 and is being staged in Sanya for the fifth time in eight years, annually rakes in a global television audience of about a
billion viewers.

“Miss World has a special relationship with Sanya and there is no better place to begin our 60th year celebrations,” the pageant’s co-chairwoman Julia Morley said on the official website.

Bookmakers are seldom right. In 2009, bookies’ favorite Miss Puerto Rico failed to advance to the semi finals; but in 2008 and 2007 they got it right with Misses Russia and China, the respective winners.

Miss World in Relief Project

16th October 2010
MISS WORLD DELIVERS AID RELIEF TO THE PEOPLE OF HAINAN

Accompanied by ten contestants, reigning Miss World Kaiane Aldorino took much needed aid relief to some of the people most affected by the recent rainfall on Hainan island.

The home to Miss World in China for many years and host to this year’s 60th anniversary Final, the tropical island paradise of Hainan has seen the worst rainfall for decades with floods resulting in homes being destroyed and even loss of life.

The contestants visited the grief-stricken town of Yinggen, the third largest area in the Hainan province, said to be the poorest region, with a population of just 216,000. They heard Mayor Wang tell of how 12 families living downstream were rescued that day from their homes that had already been destroyed by the floods. Still more wait for urgent relief from rescue services.

Joining Miss World to hand out the first batch of relief supplies were Scotland, United States, China PR, France, Slovakia, Russia, Australia, Vietnam, Venezuela and Botswana. Together they started the distribution of ten tonnes of rice and five tonnes of cooking oil to some of the families and individuals most affected. Today’s relief, including a cheque for 300,000 RMB, was supported by the RAAS Group who work to produce and distribute blood antigens.

A recent Beauty With A Purpose charity auction of items donated by the Miss World contestants raised two million RMB on the night in Shanghai. Thanks to some generous donations, the total has since been swelled to an incredible eight million RMB (£750,000) for Hainan relief.

Miss World chairman Mrs Julia Morley told the Mayor: “We were very sorry to hear about the big problem you are having with the flooding. We send our love on behalf of all the nations around the world. We hope that by our supporting the RAAS Group and their warm hearts, we can bring love and hope to you.”

Botswana commented: “When driving here I saw many fields flooded, destroying the crops and livelihoods of whole families. The people of Hainan have welcomed us most warmly. We have come here to show our support at this time when these people are most in need.”

Slovakia added: “With our visit we are not just bringing much needed supplies, but most importantly giving the people hope during the worst period in their lives. We want the world to know what is happening here.”

Venezuela said: “To see where I money goes, to witness the good that can be done, that is such a special feeling for me. I was overwhelmed by what we heard and saw but happy to know that we could make a difference.”

Miss World 2010 contestants, Beachwear shoot

15th October 2010
RAIN STOPS PLAY AT MISS WORLD BEACHWEAR SHOOT

Swimsuits and raindrops aren’t a good mix, as the Miss World contestants discovered in Sanya. The top 40 semi finalists stood in bath robes while waiting for the rain to stop – but it held off just long enough to grab a few photographs in their beachwear before the heavens opened again.

Not to be put off by the rain storm, some girls sang ‘Singing in the Rain’ and danced with parasols, while others enjoyed cups of green tea and fruit cocktails as they looked out across the bay from the hotel’s ‘sun’ terrace.

Netherlands said: “This isn’t the usual weather for bikinis but we’re making the most of it. It’s quite funny actually.”

Moldova added: “It wasn’t the weather to go to the beach but when you’re in Miss World, you prepare for anything. The singing is great fun. We have to laugh about it.”

As an additional irony, the girls were each presented with a beautiful fan as a memento of their day. Something that will come in more useful when the clouds clear again!

Today’s top 40 semi finalists in Miss World Beachwear were: Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Bolivia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Cape Verde, Cayman Islands, China PR, Czech Republic, France, French Polynesia, Ghana, Guadeloupe, Hong Kong China, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Martinique, Moldova, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Russia, St Lucia, Scotland, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey, Ukraine, United States and Zimbabwe.
