X Factor's Matt Cardle accused of dumping girlfriend after audition saying: 'I stand a better chance of winning if I'm single'

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Split: X Factor favourite Matt Cardle is accused of breaking up with Lauren Cutmore, his girlfriend of four years, after X Factor apparently decided he had a better chance of winning if he was single

He's already second favourite to win the X Factor following his breathtaking performance on the show last night.

But for one person, painter and decorator Matt Cardle's participation in the ITV show has been less than successful.

Matt's former girlfriend of four years Lauren Cutmore has claimed the 27-year-old decided to end their relationship after apparently being told by producers he would stand a better chance on the series if he was single.

And now Lauren's father has come forward to say the 24-year-old brunette, who was seen supporting Matt at his audition, has been left devastated by his decision.

Mick Cutmore, 55, told the Sunday Mirror: 'Matt has been really unfair to Lauren. She went along to Matt's first X Factor audition and stood in the queue with him for hours and supported him backstage.

'They even kissed for the cameras after he was voted through to the next round by the judges.

Applause: Lauren was thrilled that Matt received four yeses from the judges

'But then straight afterwards he dumped her. When Lauren asked why, he said the X Factor thought it would be better if he was single.

'They said he would stand a better chance if he wasn't with someone.'

Viewers of the audition stage of X Factor saw Matt accompanied by Lauren as he was interviewed by host Dermot O'Leary and then congratulating him backstage after his successful audition.

The pair started dating when they worked together at The Bull Hotel in Halstead, Essex, in 2006.

Since then, Lauren had supported Matt in his musical career, often travelling to see him perform with his band Darwyn and Seven Summers.

Mick added: 'Lauren has been very sad about it all. It's awful how he has treated her.'

However, Matt has insisted the split was nothing to do with his success on the show.
He added: 'Sometimes things just come to an end, but what happened would always have happened. It's been hard and normally I would have been out drinking to deal with it but because I'm on the show, I can't.

'We're still friends though - she's an absolute sweetheart.'

Lauren also insisted things ended well for the couple, adding: 'Matt and I used to go out but we aren't anymore.

'All I can say is there's no animosity. I wish him all the best and I hope he succeeds.'

Following his performance of David Guetta's When Love Takes Over on the show last night, Matt has been named second favourite to win the series with odds of 4/1, with Aiden Grimshaw just ahead of him at 7/2.
